Rivian R2 Release Date
Rivian has already confirmed that the R2 will be launched in the first half of 2026 and, from what I’ve seen, deliveries should begin shortly after production ramps up at the company’s factory in Normal, Illinois. The company is also planning an R2-dedicated event in early 2026, which I’m really looking forward to, because that’s when they will finally reveal all the details: pricing, trim levels, official battery specifications, the full equipment list and all the performance data. Until then, we only have partial information, but it’s already enough to get a clear idea of how significant this SUV is going to be.
R2 Launch Edition
The Rivian R2 will launch with a Launch Edition, and what I really appreciate is that it’s not the most expensive or most advanced version that other electric vehicle brands usually offer. The Launch Edition will come equipped with all-wheel drive and two motors, but it won’t be a fully loaded model. Rivian’s goal is to offer a variant that’s affordable and appealing to a wider audience. It will be well-equipped, just not with the highest specifications.
What’s interesting is that Rivian is taking the opposite approach compared to manufacturers like Tesla or Lucid. Instead of launching the most expensive configuration right away, Rivian wants the R2 to quickly win over regular buyers. They’re starting with a version that suits most users, and once production increases, they will introduce additional variants, including a single-motor version and even a tri-motor version.
Rivian R2 Price
For me, the biggest reason the R2 is likely to become so popular is its starting price. Rivian has already confirmed multiple times that the R2 will start at $45,000 before incentives and they’re sticking to that number. When you compare it to the bigger R1S and R1T, which both starts well above $70,000, the R2 suddenly feels a lot more accessible.
It reminds me of how the Tesla Model Y took off—simply because it was affordable and practical for so many people. And if you go for the fully loaded tri-motor setup later on, those versions might climb into the mid-$70,000 range depending on how Rivian finalizes the options.
Powertrains & Battery Options
Rivian has confirmed that the R2 will be available in three different powertrain variants, and here’s how I see them. The single-motor, rear-wheel-drive version will probably be the most affordable and is perfect if you want to maximize range.
The dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup comes standard with the Launch Edition and, in my opinion, strikes a nice balance between performance, capability, and price.
Then there’s the tri-motor all-wheel-drive version, which is the top-performance model. I expect it to deliver the quickest acceleration, though it will probably come with the highest price tag.
Battery & Range
The R2 will come with two battery pack options, both built using the brand-new LG Energy Solution 4695 cylindrical cells. From what I’ve seen, these cells offer higher energy density, better thermal efficiency, and more capacity compared to the 2170 cells used in the R1 series. I’m excited that the expected range should be over 300 miles on the EPA cycle, though the exact numbers will depend on the configuration. We’ll get the official range figures for each variant at the 2026 R2 event.
Charging & New Features
One of the things I’m really looking forward to with the Rivian R2 is its bidirectional charging. It’ll support full vehicle-to-home capability, which means I could actually power my house during an outage or even cut down on electricity costs by charging the car at night and using that energy during expensive peak hours.
Another big upgrade is the switch to the North American Charging System (NACS). The Rivian R2 is company’s first model to use Tesla’s charging port. They originally showed it on the rear passenger side for European markets, but now Rivian has moved it to the rear driver’s side – which makes a lot more sense here.
Platform, Chassis & Suspension
For the suspension, Rivian is giving the R2 a setup that I personally think will work really well for everyday driving. It’s got MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link suspension in the rear. To me, that combination usually means a nice balance—comfortable on normal roads but still capable enough if you decide to take it off the pavement once in a while.
Rivian R2 Dimensions & Exterior
For me, the Rivian R2 really feels like Rivian’s answer to a more compact and affordable version of the R1S. It’s a mid-size SUV with a wheelbase of 2,935 mm and an overall length of 4,715 mm, so it’s definitely easier to manage in daily driving. It stands about 1,700 mm tall, comes in a 5-door layout, and seats five people comfortably. What excites me even more is that this will be Rivian’s first vehicle sold globally, including in Europe, which shows how important the R2 is for the brand.
