A New Flagship for 2027

The Toyota GR GT Supercar is expected no earlier than the 2027 model. It’s been developed alongside its GR GT3 race car and the upcoming Lexus LFA successor. This new supercar is a vision of Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda’s “driver first” philosophy.

Toyota has positioned the GR GT as road-legal race car, leveraging it’s hybrid performance, a front mid-ship layout and track focussed chassis engineering.

Design and Aerodynamics

Unlink most super cars that goes into full production where styling is completed before aero-engineering, the Toyota GR GT supercar is shaped with an aero first approach. What this means is, the engineers defined the aerodynamics and cooling requirements before designer even sketched the body. Designing a car with aero-first approach, this could offer major benefits especially for a high performance vehicle.

In a typical car development, the design studio creates the shape first and the aero team tries to optimise the airflow around it. This forces engineer to “fix” aerodynamics issues without altering the core design. Now, with an aero first approach, like that of Toyota GR GT, the body shape is already optimised for downforce, drag and stability.

This approach also provides better cooling and thermal management. By defining cooling airflow paths first, the car can place vents, ducts, grills and heat extraction zones exactly where they are most effective. This means the rise of overheating under track conditions drops dramatically. 

An aero-first shape would ensure balanced front-to-rear downforce, reduced lift at high speeds, stable turn in and cornering and better performance under heavy braking. 

Lightweight Construction

Toyota kept the GR GT as light and rigid as possible by using an all-aluminum body, carbon-fiber panels for the hood, roof, and rear hatch, and strong forged-aluminum suspension arms. The goal of Toyota is to keep the car’s weight at or below 3,858 pounds with a balanced 45:55 front-to-rear distribution.

Toyota also lowered the seats and key components and over all body weight. Because the seats are set low and the engine sits behind the front axle, the GR GT will probably feel more like a race car than a plush touring car—focusing on driver feedback and control rather than comfort.

Engine, Hybrid System & Performance

The GR GT uses a new hybrid powertrain that combines a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine with an electric motor mounted in the transaxle. Toyota says the system produces a total of 641 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission, which is designed to shift quickly and support the car’s performance focus rather than comfort.

The battery is positioned above the rear suspension to improve weight distribution. Power is managed through a carbon-fiber torque tube and a mechanical limited-slip differential, which are intended to improve traction and stability under high-performance use.

Chassis, Wheels & Brakes

The GR GT is equipped with high-performance components, including Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes with six-piston front calipers, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires developed specifically for the car and 20-inch forged BBS wheels.

Suspension duties are handled by a double-wishbone setup at both the front and rear, using forged aluminum arms to reduce weight. A

ccording to Toyota, the suspension is designed to balance daily usability with track capability. The company says development testing took place at Fuji Speedway, the Nürburgring, and the Shimoyama proving ground to evaluate the car under different driving conditions.

Toyota doesn’t plan to price the GR GT anywhere near the LFA’s supercar territory. Instead, it’s expected to be closer to the cost of European GT3-level cars like the Porsche 911 GT3 or Mercedes-AMG GT. Early estimates suggest a starting price of around $300,000, though that could change. Toyota’s stated goal is for the GR GT to function as a usable high-performance model rather than a limited-production showcase vehicle.

GR GT Sales Through Lexus Dealerships

Although the GR GT is branded under Gazoo Racing, it will not be sold at Toyota dealerships in the U.S. and Canada. Instead, only select Lexus dealerships meeting Gazoo Racing service and sales requirements will handle the GR GT. Toyota says the approach is intended to provide buyers with a more tailored ownership and service process.

The GR GT is still under development. Toyota has hinted that production will begin no earlier than 2027, though delays are possible as engineering continues.

Our Take

Based on the information released so far, the 2027 Toyota GR GT is positioned as a high-performance hybrid sports car rather than a limited-run concept model. Its layout combines a new hybrid V-8 powertrain with a rear-wheel-drive configuration and a strong emphasis on weight control and aerodynamics.

Toyota has stated that the vehicle was developed using an aero-first process, where cooling and aerodynamic requirements were prioritized early in development. This aero-first development method is closer to how GT3 race cars are engineered than how most road-going supercars are developed.. This approach is intended to support stability, thermal management, and consistent performance, rather than focusing solely on styling.

When viewed alongside its lightweight construction, performance-focused braking hardware, and track-oriented tires, the GR GT appears aimed at delivering high performance without entering the pricing territory of ultra-low-volume hypercars. Toyota also notes that testing at circuits such as Fuji Speedway and the Nürburgring was used to refine the car’s overall setup.
